Two ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Public Library buildings suffered significant damage from the tornado on May 16 and will be shut down indefinitely.
The impacted locations are: Cabanne Library, 1106 Union Blvd., and the Julia Davis Library, 4415 Natural Bridge Ave.
Both will remain closed while the major damage can be evaluated, repairs planned and carried out, according to a release from SLPL.Â
“Our first reaction is relief that no one in the Library was injured in these very dangerous situations,†said Waller McGuire, CEO of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Public Library, in a press release. “I want to acknowledge and thank Library staff, who acted quickly and calmly, following emergency procedures, and I believe prevented serious injuries.â€
The Library's summer reading activities and summer camp programs scheduled at Cabanne and Julia Davis will be relocated to other locations. Additionally hours at Walnut Park Library, 5760 West Florissant Ave., have also been extended to accommodate customers.
The materials, programs, services, computers and staff from the closed locations are being relocated throughout the system in order to serve ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½.
“Our libraries throughout the City immediately had large numbers of customers without power or connectivity who needed computers, internet access, and other services," said McGuire. “Thirteen of our libraries are open now and still serving those needs in addition to our regular customers. The library always works to serve as a vital community resource in an emergency.â€
