Watch for bagworms feeding on many garden plants, especially juniper and arborvitae. The least toxic solution to control young caterpillars at this time is to spray the foliage with Bacillus thuringiensis (B.T., Dipel, etc.).
Plant pumpkins now to be sure you will have jack-o’-lanterns by Halloween.
Watch for lightning bugs now on warm nights. Both the adults and larvae are important predators, often feeding on slugs, snails and cutworms. Encourage children to enjoy but not collect them.
Apply an inch of water to the garden each week if rainfall is lacking.
Dig and divide spring-flowering bulbs as the foliage yellows and dies.
