FERGUSON — A new video released by police Wednesday shows the chaotic moments after a Ferguson officer was knocked to the ground — and the intense reaction by his fellow officers — during a protest on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown’s death.
Officer Travis Brown’s body camera footage shows his collision with protester Elijah Gantt, his fall and then his fellow officers’ frenzied efforts to get his limp body to a police car amid a gathering of people that grows increasingly panicked and loud.
As they load him into the car, Brown can barely be heard moaning. Then an officer calls Brown by his nickname as she tries to get him to respond.
“TJ, TJ, look at me — what day is it?” she says.
He doesn’t reply.
The body camera footage was released along with two other videos from Friday night.

One shows a small group of protesters milling around the gate while several of them shake the fence lightly.
The third video is body camera footage of an officer arresting Gantt, the man accused of knocking Brown down. It, too, shows how angry protesters are, screaming and swearing at the officers and following them as they try to haul away Gantt. It also depicts Gantt fighting to get away from them, kicking one officer in the shoulder, breaking free at least once and finally walking with two officers into the Ferguson fire station.
Wednesday’s video release follows a news conference on Tuesday where Ferguson police Chief Troy Doyle showed multiple videos depicting the moments leading up to Brown and Gantt’s collision, as protesters outside the Ferguson Police Department on Friday night aggressively shook the fence around the station, then scattered as officers arrived to arrest them.
Brown remained in critical condition this week with a severe brain injury, “bravely fighting for his life,” his family said Wednesday.
The incident happened Friday night when about 40 people gathered on the 10th anniversary of the police shooting of Michael Brown. The gathering started as a reunion in front of the police headquarters but became turbulent at about 11 p.m., when police said they went out to arrest a few people who damaged the department’s gate.
Police said when Brown went to arrest Gantt, 28, Gantt ran away. Brown came around a white car, and seconds later, Gantt ran into Brown at full speed, knocking the officer to the ground and falling on top of him.
Gantt was charged with three counts of fourth-degree assault on a special victim, resisting arrest, first-degree assault and property damage. He remained in custody Wednesday on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
The body camera video released on Wednesday starts out as Brown walks out of the fire department with several other officers talking about who was damaging the fence.
‘I’ve got an officer down!’
“Did they already take the gate?” Brown asks the other officers. “I saw someone go across the street with the gate, so where’d they go?”
Then Brown and the officers begin walking toward the Andy Wurm tire shop parking lot, across the street from the police department, where protesters are gathered.
The atmosphere is relatively calm, a man can be heard yelling about free hot dogs. A woman off screen asks, “Where that baby at?”
Brown makes his way through some parked cars. A group of protesters begins to run away. Brown says, “You under arrest, bro.”
Brown directs another officer to go one way — “cut that way,” he says twice. He then darts toward the spot where Gantt hits him.
The next moment, Brown is hit and falls to the ground, although little can be made out of the collision. His camera is partially covered after the fall, but the audio continues.
For the next four minutes of video, officers gather around Brown, call for help and then work to move him to safety.
“Move! Move! Move!” one shouts. “Back up!” another yells.
An officer then screams, “Back the (expletive) up!”
All the while, others — maybe protesters — are also screaming.
A car alarm goes off. Another officer says, more quietly: “Hey, Brown.”
“I’ve got an officer down!” one shouts into a radio.
“Relax, TJ, relax,” another says over the screaming.
The video then goes mostly black. But the audio continues: The car alarm is going off, people are screaming, officers are giving orders to back up.
One officer keeps saying Brown’s name.
The officers then each take hold of one of Brown’s limbs, and a female officer says, “Carry him up. Carry him up. Come on.”
Someone warns, “Watch his head. Watch his head.”
The video reappears, showing shadows cast onto a wall of the officers as they lift and carry him.
They put him down multiple times as they carry him across the parking lot and into a patrol car.
“TJ, you’re good, bud,” a woman says, as Brown’s limp arm comes into view. He’s wearing a blue-banded watch.
After he’s in the car, a man yells, “Close the door!”
The door closes, and the chaos quiets.
A woman says then, “TJ, TJ, look at me.”
Brown does not respond.
The screen goes black as the police radio announces Brown is being taken to a hospital by an officer. The car’s engine can be heard revving as it drives away, sirens in the distance.
“Where we going?” an officer asks.
The video then ends.
